  3. PowerPoint Guru: An Interview with Hud Duque

Intervieuw with PowerPoint guru Hud Duque

Last week we introduced you to our young design intern from brazil. This week we put our other talented friend from Brazil in the spotlight; Hud Duque.

Hud is a top expert PowerPoint designer. At Mr.Prezident we rely on him and his animation skills to take PowerPoint presentations to levels never seen before. As a digital designer with several years of experience, Hud focusses on storytelling and interactive media that makes captivating ideas easy to understand.

So Hud, where exactly are you from?

I grew up in Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil. It’s the state capital, a big city with five million people.

What is your background in design?

Well, my mom is a dentist but she always used to paint and that had a big influence on me growing up. The difference is that I decided to use modern tools and started playing around with design software at a young age.

Did you study design?

I studied animation in college, which eventually lead to an an internship at an agency in in Brazil. They basically hired me to animate in PowerPoint.

So those were your first steps into the world of presenting?

Yes, during the internship I realized the full potential of PowerPoint. Although, like many others I initially thought it to be a very limiting software! So my attitude towords PowerPoint changed over time.

What’s your story with Mr.Prezident?

In 2015 I started freelancing. I was looking for different ways to present and came across Prezi. I searched for experts in the field and found the Mr.Prezident website. From all the experts I had found, Mr.Prezident was doing the most impressive work using Prezi as a tool. I reached out and spoke with the two founders about a potential collaboration.

What do you think about working with Mr.Prezident?

It took some time until the right project came along, but once it did we have been flying and doing great work together. I also love Amsterdam and the Headquarters there. The entire team consists of very talented and kind individuals.

Do you like using any other presentation software besides PowerPoint?

I'm skilled in using a variety of creative programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Premiere. As far as presentations go however, I am mainly talented and experienced in PowerPoint. I am grateful to have learnt so much about Prezi from the creative team at Mr.Prezident and will keep learning more.

And so our readers get to know you a bit better, what do you do in your free time?

I like to travel, study and to read about history and culture. Other hobbies include mixing music, cooking, and playing classical guitar.

What does the future of presenting hold in store?

We will keep seeing more use of a 3D environment, maybe in combination with Prezi.  Also, many UX and UI designers are getting involved in making presentations far more interactive than they have been before.

Lastly, do you have any presentation tips for our readers?

Ha! Avoid bullet points! Because they have a typical high school presentation feel. You are giving the audience exactly what they expected when they came in. I say: give them something unexpected. Also: less is
